The aesthetics and ethics of performative Holocaust memory in Poland a collaborative and audience-participatory model of remembering the Jewish victims.
31. Heidi Dahl Remember that the question is how much of one chocolate each child gets. Memory researchers across disciplines and subdisciplines are actively exploring collaborative remembering. However, despite this common interest and growing research area, there is currently relatively little crosstalk between perspectives. In this introduction to the edited volume, Collaborative Remembering: Theories, Research, and Applications, we first provide a historical context that highlights the emerging focus on social factors in the study of memory. We remember in social contexts. We reminisce about the past together, collaborate to remember shared experiences, and remember in the context of our communities and cultures.

This article presents an analysis of collaborative remembering sequences in a corpus of interactions collected in a workplace where a team of designers developed a video television commercial. On the basis of coding and analysing linguistic and bodily behaviours in 158 such Intimate couples developed an interconnected memory system. This general focus on collaborative remembering in small groups has a broad scope, as we sketch in the section, Collaborative Memory Phenomena, including many distinctive forms of remembering, memory contents, and collaborative processes, which have many different functions in individual and social life. Individual and collaborative remembering of the assassination of Israel's Prime Minister, Itzhak Rabin, were compared. In line with previous laboratory findings on memory of neutral stimuli, it was hypothesised that collaborative remembering (three individuals reaching a common response) and nominal … Collaborative remembering sequences (CRSs) allow us to analyze those moments in which people remember with other people in everyday environments.

Collaborating groups typically show reduced recall relative to nominal groups, i.e., to the cumulated non-redundant recall of the same number of people remembering in isolation-a finding termed collaborative inhibition. One question that remains is whether it matters with whom we discuss our memories. This chapter introduces an epistemic perspective on narration and illustrates, based on data from storytelling in free natural conversation, how collaborative remembering can instantiate distributed cognition: first, when tellers deploy expressions of forgetfulness or explicitly enlist the aid of other participants; second, during various forms of collaborative turn sequencing with rapid This issue is examined in studies on collaborative remembering. When memory of a collaborating group of several people is compared with individual memory, the collaborating group shows better recall than just a single individual (e.g., Hinsz, Tindale, & Vollrath, 1997; Meudell, Hitch, & Boyle, 1995).In the collaborative recall task, however, a more appropriate contrast is applied, and memory Transactive memory theory describes the processes by which benefits for memory can occur when remembering is shared in dyads or groups.

working as couples, or as individuals in episodic or semantic memory tasks. Collaborative inhibition and collective memory were comparable between ethnically Diverse triads (one Asian, Black/African American, White each) and Uniform triads (three White members). At the same time, in diverse groups Black/African American members contributed less during collaboration and did not show post-collaborative recall benefits. Previous studies showed that collaborative remembering can reduce false memories through a process of mutual error checking, although conclusions were limited by the nature of the memory tasks (very few errors).
